 Russia, the largest country in the world, is never far from international news these days: from the upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi, to the latest controversy from the ever contentious President Vladimir Putin, Russia is a nation that consistently holds our attention – and yet, for many, Russia maintains an air of mystery. The end of Communism in 1991 radically changed the nation with the country’s once tightly-controlled natural resources suddenly up for sale to the most enterprising – and, more importantly, luckiest – Russians. Those who had the chance to cut themselves a piece of the oil-rich pie have done well for themselves, with many oil magnates now cosying up to the big wigs in the Kremlin- whether for better or for worse.

Moscow has the greatest number of billionaires of any city in the world, according to a global rich list, with London in fifth place. The Russian capital – known for its oligarch ghettos and glitzy boutiques - can boast 76 dollar billionaires, compared to New York's 70 and Hong Kong's 54. London comes fifth with 40, just behind Beijing with 41.

The list, compiled by Chinese luxury publishing group Hurun Report, found the United States has the greatest number of uber-wealthy with 409 billionaires, compared to China's 317 and third-place Russia with 88. The UK trails in fifth place with 56 "members of the Nine-Zero Club".

Carlos Slim, 73, the Mexican telecoms tycoon, takes top spot as the "Richest Man on the Planet" with a staggering personal fortune of $66bn (£43bn). Second comes US investor Warren Buffet, 82, with $58bn. Microsoft owner Bill Gates places fourth with $54bn.

Maybe 270,000 acres isn't what it used to be. Two billionaire brothers from Texas recently bought 177,000 acres of ranch land in Montana, bringing their total land holdings in the state to more than 276,000. The brothers, Farris and Dan Wilks, who made their money from selling Frac Tech (the oil business), now own 431 square miles in Montana.

Oracle Corp. CEO Larry Ellison Purchases The Hawaiian Island of Lania


Oracle CEO Ellison Closes On Deal To Buy 98 Percent Of Land In Hawaiian Island Of Lanai -- Washington Post/AP

HONOLULU — Oracle Corp. CEO Larry Ellison has closed on his deal to buy most of the Hawaiian island of Lanai, the island’s seller said Thursday.

Billionaire David Murdock’s Castle & Cooke Inc. said the deal has been completed for about 88,000 acres on the island near Maui. The land makes up 98 percent of the island’s 141 square miles.

A £100million superyacht commissioned by Britain's richest woman has taken to the seas for the first time.

The luxury vessel - the biggest this country has ever seen - was constructed for former Miss UK Kirsty Bertarelli over two years in Plymouth, Devon, and boasts a helipad and six decks.

Mrs Bertarelli and her Swiss husband Ernesto had the 96-metre Vava II built to replace their previous 47m ship.
